Power Platform Fundamentals (PL-900) prep, adaptive plan with ARIA

PL-900 is Microsoft's beginner-tier Power Platform Fundamentals cert. 60 minutes, roughly 40 to 60 questions, passing score 700 out of 1000. It tests concept recognition only. You will not build an app, write a flow, or model data inside the test environment. The credential is most relevant for business analysts, citizen developers, IT staff supporting low-code initiatives, and anyone working in a Microsoft 365 estate where Power Platform is being rolled out. It pairs with MS-900 to cover the broader Microsoft business apps surface.

What the exam is

DomainWeight
Describe the business value of Microsoft Power Platform15-20%
Identify foundational components of Microsoft Power Platform10-15%
Demonstrate the capabilities of Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, Power Pages, Copilot Studio)50-55%
Demonstrate the business value of complementary services (AI Builder, Dataverse, connectors)10-15%

The cert is permanent. There is no renewal cycle.

How ARIA preps you for it

The CAT evaluation lands a per-domain skill estimate before any roadmap is written. Most candidates land heavy on the capabilities domain, because Power Apps canvas versus model-driven, Power Automate cloud versus desktop, and Power BI Pro versus Premium are the distinctions that catch beginners who only ever used one of the tools. Your roadmap is weighted to those gaps, not to a generic syllabus. The error backlog tags every miss by Power Platform component (Apps canvas, Apps model-driven, Automate cloud, Automate desktop, BI Pro, BI Premium, Pages, Copilot Studio, Dataverse, AI Builder), so weak components surface fast.

Common pitfalls

  • Confusing canvas apps with model-driven apps. Different builder, different data model, different use case. Several questions hinge on the choice.
  • Skipping Dataverse. It is the data backbone of model-driven Apps and shows up in roughly 15 percent of all questions. Underestimated by candidates who only used canvas.
  • Underestimating Copilot Studio coverage. Microsoft has pushed Copilot integration heavily across Power Platform. Expect questions on Copilot Studio (formerly Power Virtual Agents).

Why PL-900 is worth taking

It opens PL-200 (Power Platform Functional Consultant), PL-400 (Developer), and the broader low-code and citizen developer tracks. Time investment is small, around 20 to 25 hours from zero, and the credential is recognized in enterprise Microsoft estates.
