AWS certification renewal in 2026, every path explained
Every AWS certification has a three-year shelf life. Miss the window and the badge goes inactive, the AWS Partner Network credit drops off your firm's tally, and the cert quietly stops counting on a CV. Most people only realize this six weeks before expiry, then scramble. This article is the renewal map: every path that keeps a cert active, the cross-credit shortcut most candidates miss, the cost, the timing rules, and what to do if the clock has already run out.
The three-year clock
AWS certifications expire three years from the date you pass the exam, not from the date you registered or activated the badge. AWS emails you renewal reminders at 12 months out, 6 months out, and 3 months out. If you do nothing, the cert moves to inactive on the day after the third anniversary.
You can renew as early as 6 months before the expiration date without losing time on the back end. Renew earlier than that and the new clock starts on the day you pass the renewing exam, which costs you months. The 6-month window is the sweet spot: enough time to study without burning the back-end cushion.
The two paths to renew
AWS gives you two valid renewal paths in 2026:
- Retake the same exam. Pass the current version of the cert you already hold. The new 3-year clock starts on the day of the retake.
- Pass a different AWS cert that crosses-credits the one you hold. This is the path most candidates miss, and it is usually faster, cheaper per cert held, and more useful to your career.
There is no continuing-education path, no CEU credits, no professional-development hours that count. AWS removed the discounted recertification exam in 2018, so the price is the same as a first-time sit.
How cross-credit recertification actually works
This is the part worth memorizing. Passing a higher-level AWS exam automatically renews any lower-level cert in your active set, regardless of path.
Foundational (CLF-C02)
The Cloud Practitioner is renewed by passing any Associate, Professional, or Specialty exam. Pass SAA-C03, DVA-C02, SOA-C02, SAP-C02, DOP-C02, SCS-C02, or MLS-C01 and your CLF-C02 renews automatically. You do not need to do anything; the renewal posts to your AWS Certification account within 5 business days of passing.
Associate (SAA-C03, DVA-C02, SOA-C02)
Any of the three Associates is renewed by passing any Professional or Specialty exam. Pass SAP-C02 and you renew SAA-C03, DVA-C02, and SOA-C02 simultaneously if you hold all three. Pass DOP-C02 and you renew DVA-C02 and SOA-C02 (DOP-C02 is the DevOps Professional, which sits above both Associates in its path).
Professional (SAP-C02, DOP-C02)
Professional certs are renewed by retaking the same exam or passing a different Professional or Specialty. The Solutions Architect Professional and the DevOps Professional cross-credit each other. Either one also renews any Specialty in your active set.
Specialty (SCS-C02, MLS-C01, others)
Specialty certs are renewed by retaking the same Specialty or passing a Professional. They do not cross-credit each other. Holding both Security Specialty and Machine Learning Specialty means each one needs its own renewal path.
The renewal cost map by cert
| Cert held | Cheapest renewal path | Cost | New clock |
|---|---|---|---|
| CLF-C02 | Pass any Associate (e.g., SAA-C03) | $150 | 3 years |
| SAA-C03 | Retake SAA-C03 | $150 | 3 years |
| SAA-C03 | Pass SAP-C02 | $300 | 3 years (renews SAA + DVA + SOA if held) |
| DVA-C02 | Retake DVA-C02 | $150 | 3 years |
| SOA-C02 | Retake SOA-C02 | $150 | 3 years |
| SAP-C02 | Retake SAP-C02 | $300 | 3 years |
| DOP-C02 | Pass SAP-C02 (or vice versa) | $300 | 3 years (renews both Pros if held) |
| SCS-C02 | Retake SCS-C02 | $300 | 3 years |
| MLS-C01 | Retake MLS-C01 | $300 | 3 years |
Two patterns fall out of the table. First, if you hold an Associate and you have any plan to move toward a Professional in your career, time the Pro for the renewal year of your Associate. Same money spent, two certs renewed, real career advancement. Second, if you hold multiple Associates, one Pro renews them all, which is the single best dollar value in the AWS cert ladder.
What "expired" actually means
If the renewal clock runs out, the cert moves to inactive status in your AWS Certification account. Three things change:
- The digital badge stops verifying as current. Recruiters who click the Credly link see "expired" rather than "active." This is the part that hurts on a CV.
- AWS Partner Network credit drops. If your employer is in the APN, your expired cert no longer counts toward their tier qualifications. This is a real internal-politics moment for consulting firms.
- You lose the option to use the cert toward your firm's APN points until you re-pass. No grace period, no late fee, no soft renewal. AWS removed the 60-day grace window years ago.
The cert itself does not disappear from your transcript. AWS keeps the record of the original pass, and you can still list "AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate (2022 to 2025)" on a resume if you want to acknowledge the lapse honestly. But if you want it to count as current, you have to pass the most recent version of the exam at full price.
The renewal exam is the current version
This catches a lot of people. If you passed SAA-C02 in 2022 and you go to renew in 2025, the exam you sit is SAA-C03, the current version. AWS does not let you re-pass an old version of the exam. The blueprint may have shifted (SAA-C03 added new networking and security domains), so the renewal is sometimes harder than the original sit, particularly if the gap between old version and new version is large.
For Associates this is rarely a major issue (the cores stay similar). For Professionals and Specialties, the version drift can be substantial. Plan 30 to 50 hours of refresh study even if you held the previous version, particularly for SAP-C02, DOP-C02, and any Specialty.
The 6-month renewal window
This is the timing rule worth memorizing.
- Renew more than 6 months early: the new clock starts on the day you pass, and you forfeit the unused months on your existing cert.
- Renew within the 6-month window before expiry: the new clock starts on your existing cert's expiration date, so you keep the full 3 years on the back end.
- Renew after expiry: the cert is inactive. You re-pass and the new clock starts on that day.
The optimal renewal date is 5 to 6 months before expiry. Far enough out to leave room for a fail-and-retake without lapsing, close enough to the wire to capture the back-end month preservation. If you booked your original exam on August 15, 2023, target a renewal sit between February 15 and May 15, 2026.
Common pitfalls
Forgetting to log in to your AWS Certification account. The renewal reminders go to the email registered on your AWS Certification (Pearson VUE) profile, not your AWS console root user. If you registered with a personal email and have since changed jobs, the reminders may go to a dead address. Verify the email on file.
Assuming the badge auto-updates. It does, but only after the new pass posts. Check your Credly profile within 5 business days of a renewal pass. If it has not updated, contact AWS Certification support; the most common cause is a mismatch between your AWS Certification profile name and your Credly profile name.
Booking a 4-week prep plan for a Professional retake. SAP-C02 and DOP-C02 are 75 to 200 hours of prep depending on starting level. The 4-week vs 12-week roadmap math applies in full. A retake is not a refresher; it is the same exam.
Letting the cert lapse to "force" a deeper restudy. A trick I have seen attempted. Inactive status is not neutral. The CV cost and the APN cost are real. If you want to upgrade your knowledge, take a more advanced cert in the same path, which renews the existing one in the process.
The strategic renewal: stack a Pro instead of retaking
The smartest renewal play is rarely "retake the same Associate." It is "use the renewal year as the forcing function to pass a Professional."
If you hold SAA-C03 and you have been thinking about SAP-C02, the renewal year is the right year. Same $300 spent (versus $150 to retake SAA-C03), but the SAP-C02 is the actual career-advancing credential, and it renews SAA-C03 (and DVA-C02 and SOA-C02 if you hold them) in the process. The full path map is in the AWS certification path 2026 article.
The bad version of this play is over-reaching. SAP-C02 is not an Associate retake. If your readiness on the Associate domains is at 75% rather than 90%, the Professional jump is too big. Treat it as a separate prep cycle, with at least 80 hours budgeted, and take a real readiness measurement before booking.
Run a 15-minute renewal readiness check
Whichever renewal path you pick, the first move is the same: measure where you actually are on the current version of the exam. A version-drift gap is invisible until you sit a real diagnostic.
Run the free CAT evaluation on your renewing cert. Fifteen minutes, twenty-five questions, a per-domain skill estimate. If your current readiness is above 80% on the new version, plan a 4-week renewal sprint. Below 80%, plan 8 to 12 weeks and treat it like a fresh prep cycle. The readiness conditions are the same on a renewal as on a first sit; the cert provider does not give partial credit for having held the old version.
Common questions
Does AWS notify me when my cert is about to expire?
Yes, by email at 12, 6, and 3 months before the expiry date. The address is the one on your AWS Certification (Pearson VUE) profile. Verify it is current; the most common cause of a missed renewal is a stale email on file from a job change.
Can I renew an AWS cert online?
The renewal exam itself can be taken online via Pearson VUE OnVUE or in person at a test center. The renewal process is identical to a first sit: book through aws.training, pay, sit the exam, pass, badge updates within 5 business days.
What if I fail the renewal exam?
The 14-day cooling-off period applies, same as any AWS exam retake. Book again, sit again, pay again. If your existing cert expires while you are between attempts, the cert lapses; there is no extension granted because you are mid-renewal.
Are there discounts on AWS recertification?
No standing discount. AWS occasionally runs promotional 50% off vouchers tied to events (re:Invent, AWS Summit) or for active certified holders. Check the AWS Certification dashboard quarterly. The voucher applies to a renewal sit the same as a first sit.
Does CLF-C02 renew if I pass an Azure or GCP cert?
No. AWS does not cross-credit other vendors. Only AWS exams renew AWS certs. The reverse is also true: an AWS cert does nothing for an Azure or GCP renewal.
How does this compare to other vendors?
CompTIA (Security+, Network+, A+) uses a CEU model where you can renew with continuing education credits or by passing a higher-level CompTIA cert. ISC2 (CISSP, CCSP) uses a CPE model with annual maintenance fees. Microsoft Azure (AZ-104, AZ-305 etc.) uses an annual free renewal assessment that you complete online. AWS is unusual in requiring a full re-sit every three years with no free assessment alternative.
What I would do
If I held a single Associate and the renewal year was on me, I would book the SAP-C02 for that year. Same cycle, $300 spent, three certs forward in the career arc instead of one cert held in place. If the readiness gap to SAP-C02 was too wide, I would retake the Associate and book a real Pro prep cycle for the year after.
If I held a Specialty (SCS-C02 or MLS-C01), I would retake the same Specialty unless I was actively pivoting careers. Specialty content is too narrow to use a different cert as the renewal vehicle, and the Pro doesn't always cover the depth your role still needs.
The cert is supposed to map to the work. Use the renewal year to align the credential to where you are heading, not just where you have been.
