Fabric Data Engineer Associate (DP-700) prep, adaptive plan with ARIA
DP-700 is the Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate exam, the 2025+ replacement for the retired DP-203. It tests data engineering on Microsoft Fabric: lakehouses, warehouses, real-time analytics, Data Factory pipelines, and notebook-driven transformation. The sitting runs about 100 minutes with 40 to 60 questions, mixing standard multiple choice with case studies.
What the exam is
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Implement and manage an analytics solution | 30-35% |
| Ingest and transform data | 30-35% |
| Monitor and optimize an analytics solution | 30-35% |
Passing score is 700 out of 1000. The exam is built on the November 2024 Skills Measured outline and covers Fabric workloads released through 2026.
How ARIA preps you for it
The CAT evaluation lands a per-domain skill estimate after 15 to 25 questions. Most candidates land heavy on Ingest and Transform Data, because Dataflow Gen2 vs notebook vs Data Factory pipeline trade-offs catch engineers who used Synapse but never owned an end-to-end Fabric workload. ARIA weights the roadmap phases to those gaps, so your time goes where you actually lose marks.
The error backlog tags every miss by Fabric component (lakehouse, warehouse, Eventstream, KQL database, semantic model, OneLake, Data Activator) and returns it on the standard 3-day, 7-day, 21-day schedule.
Common pitfalls on this cert
- Studying DP-203 material instead of DP-700. DP-203 was retired in 2024. Synapse-only content misses Fabric concepts that DP-700 actively tests. Use Fabric documentation, not legacy Synapse blog posts.
- Confusing lakehouse and warehouse. Both live on OneLake but with different SQL endpoints, security models, and supported operations. Several questions hinge on picking the right one for a stated workload.
- Skipping Data Activator and Real-Time Analytics. Newer Fabric workloads, lower study coverage in books, weighted on the exam. Read the Microsoft Learn modules.
Prerequisite
Microsoft recommends one to two years of data engineering experience and familiarity with SQL, Python or PySpark, and the Microsoft data stack. There is no formal cert prerequisite. DP-900 (Data Fundamentals) is a useful warm-up, but it is not required.
The pass guarantee
Same five conditions as every cert ARIA tracks. Sit DP-700 inside the 60-day window after eligibility, fail, and you get a full refund of the Exam Ready plan.
