Azure Data Fundamentals (DP-900) prep, adaptive plan with ARIA
DP-900 is Microsoft's beginner-tier Azure Data Fundamentals credential. The exam runs 60 minutes, holds roughly 40 to 60 questions, and you pass at 700 out of 1000. It tests concept recognition. You will not write SQL, and you will not deploy infrastructure. If you are considering an Azure data career, or planning to sit DP-700 or the DP-203 successor track later, this is the right starting point.
What the exam is
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Describe core data concepts | 25-30% |
| Identify considerations for relational data on Azure | 20-25% |
| Describe considerations for working with non-relational data on Azure | 15-20% |
| Describe an analytics workload on Azure | 25-30% |
Once earned, DP-900 is valid permanently. There is no renewal cycle.
How
ARIA preps you for it
Your prep starts with a CAT evaluation that produces a per-domain skill estimate. Most candidates land heaviest on Analytics workloads, because the distinctions between Synapse, Microsoft Fabric, and Databricks catch beginners off guard. From those numbers, your roadmap weights itself to the gaps, not to a generic outline. Your error backlog tags every miss by service, so Cosmos DB confusions, SQL Database edge cases, Synapse versus Fabric mix-ups, Data Factory pipeline questions, and Stream Analytics scenarios each surface as their own retry threads.
Common pitfalls
- Memorizing service names without understanding their job. DP-900 stems are scenario-shaped, not lookup-shaped. Knowing what each service does beats raw recall.
- Studying Synapse-heavy material in 2026. Microsoft has shifted weight toward Microsoft Fabric. Cover both, but expect Fabric questions.
- Skipping non-relational concepts. Document, key-value, graph, and columnar models all show up. Vocab questions are easy points if you read the chapter.
Why DP-900 is worth taking
DP-900 opens DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer Associate), the DP-203 successor pathways, and the DP-100 (Data Scientist) track. It is not a hard prerequisite for any of them, but the time investment is small (around 20 hours from zero) and the credential is recognized across hiring screens.
Pass guarantee
